QUEEN SALAMASINA WAS THE FIRST TO DO SO.
Salamasina is the most renown member of Samoan royalty remembered in oral traditions. She was the first person/female to hold all four paramount titles of Samoa and became known as Samoa's first “Queen” . Through her, most of the highest titles of Samoa are connected, to this day, making her a central figure in the history of Samoa. The genealogy of Salamasina is important in understanding early connections in West Polynesia; she was able to receive her paramount status precisely because of her genealogical connections to Samoa, Tonga and Fiji, and even ‘Uvea (Wallis Island).
The exact years at which she lived is open to question but most genealogies place her birth around the 15th century. Her heritage can be traced through three distinct lines. These lines are of Samoan, Tongan, and Fijian royalty.
Salamasina and Toga.
Tui toga had a daughter named Fitimaupaloga who traveled to Samoa in search of a husband. While in Samoa, she met a man named Samoanagalo. They married and produced a son named Sanalala. While out fishing one day, Sanalala was blown by a strong wind and landed at the village of Safata. He settled in Safata and eventually married Gasoloaiaolelagi. They had two daughters, Le‘atogaugatuitoga and Vaetamasoa. Vaetamasoa married a high chief of Samoa named Tui Aana and bore a son, Tamalelagi. Tamalelagi later was brought to Leulumoega, where the Tui Aana title was bestowed upon him and he married a daughter of a Tuitoga, named Vaetoeifaga. Salamasina was the daughter of Tui Aana Tamalelagi and Tui Toga's daughter Vaetoeifaga. Salamasina and Fiji.
Tuifiti was a king of Fiji who was given land in Samoa in return for services offered to Malietoa in wartime. He lived in the village of Poutasi. He married a Samoan woman and had a daughter named Totogata. Totogata married Malietoa La‘auli, who was the great-grandson of Malietoa Savea, the first of the Malietoa line. They had a daughter named Gasoloaiaolelagi. As has been stated above, Gasoloaiaolelagi married Sanalala (the grandson of Tuitoga & Samoanagalo). As already mentioned,they gave birth to Vaetamasoa, the grandmother of Salamasina.
During Queen Salamasina's reign in Samoa no WARS amongst villages, clans, or islands took place.
